Alcove Desk
A Fred Rigby Creation
Late in the afternoon, sunlight softly dives into the flat with a warm reach, sweeping across a bespoke desk from London-based designer Fred Rigby. The surroundings slowly melt away in contrast — once a slightly awkward alcove in the living room, now transformed with form and function in mind.
Rigby's furniture and interior designs are characterised by his use of organic shapes, natural symbolism and earthy materials to provide a strong connection to nature indoors. Inspired by the eponymous curves from his signature collection, the aptly named Alcove Desk is a handmade piece that is cut and carved from a solid oak plank and installed wall-to-wall.
The wood, stained through an ebonising process is treated with natural oils to provide a smooth matte finish, bringing out the darkened woodgrain in sublime detail. The edge, based on a hand-drawn line, is thicker on each end and gently curves to an attenuated profile in the middle, sculpted like the sea shaping a pebble. Elegant as it is ergonomic for resting palms, its intriguing silhouette draws the eye and invites it to touch.
Hidden underneath, the desk cleverly reveals a custom cable tray made from a single sheet of patinated steel bent to perfection, a nod to Rigby’s craft for metalwork. The oxidised patina elevates another aspect of the piece with character and functional utility. Paired with a leather GUBI Masculo chair and lighting by Wästberg, the space has been converted into a cosy modern study I’ve always wanted.
Commissioning Rigby has, in many ways, exceeded my expectations — from the raw materiality to his meticulous approach to detail, Rigby brings to the table a calming blend of organic form and playful eccentricity, delivering refinement and tactility that is built to endure. As I look to the unknown passersby below, elbow to desk, pen in hand, the alcove has become an inspiring place for quiet contemplation, creative passions, and the occasional intellectual work.
